Equality and Diversity

We have a number of policies in place to ensure that no one experiences discrimination when accessing our services. We are also an equal opportunities employer.

Equalities

Our Vision

Our vision is "To work actively towards eliminating barriers that prevent equality within the borough, and to address equality of opportunity and individual needs for all council employees, residents and service users."

Single Equality Scheme

Following good practice, we produce a pdf icon Single Equality Scheme [145KB]. This sets out our objectives to deliver our vision and how we comply with the Equality Act 2010.

Our objectives

  1. To be a fair and accessible employer
  2. To demonstrate the importance of equality and diversity issues when we procure and manage services
  3. To actively engage and work in partnership with our communities
  4. To deliver excellent customer service to everyone we serve.

Annually, we agree and publish an pdf icon Equality and Diversity Delivery Plan 2016 2017 [125KB] to support the scheme.

Creating fair and accessible services

We carry out Equality Impact Assessments (EQIAs)

An EQIA is a tool for identifying the impact of a policy, service or function on local residents or employees. If there is evidence of potentially negative impacts on the eight protected characteristics identified in the act, we look at alternatives to reduce or remove them.

If you wish to view an Equality Impact Assessment for a particular policy, please contact us.

We improve our services

We monitor the demographic make-up of our communities and compare this to who is and who isn't using our services. Doing so helps us to focus on any barriers to access that might be realistically and quickly removed.

Your right to reply

We endeavour to provide good quality services for all the community, but if you feel you have been unfairly prevented from accessing a service, we need to know. Make a complaint, comment or suggestion. All complaints are treated confidentially and fairly.

Being a fair and accessible employer

Workforce profile

We review our workforce profile on an annual basis to ensure that it is reflective of our community. We also have policies in place and conduct regular training to ensure our staff experiences dignity and respect at work.

We are an accredited member of the Disability Confident Employer Scheme (formerly Two Ticks Disability Scheme). This shows that we have continually demonstrated that we have procedures in place to encourage applicants with a disability to apply for roles at the council.
